Leo Full Moon Total Lunar Eclipse

Posted by Sheri Horn Hasan - January 31, 2018 - Blog post

Full Super Blue Blood Moon Total Wha?

Ok, first let’s dispense with the astronomy!

January 31’s Full Super Blue Blood Leo Moon total lunar eclipse (say that three times fast, I dare ya!) is so named because it’s a:

  • Full Moon: the 11-degree 37-minute Leo Moon opposes the Aquarius Sun at the same degree and conjoins with the lunar Nodes making this event a total lunar eclipse
  • Blue Moon: the second Full Moon in one calendar month
  • Super Moon: The Moon’s orbiting between 14-30% closer to the Earth—called perigee–which makes the Moon appear larger and brighter than during a normal lunar orbit
  • Blood Moon: During the lunar eclipse, when the Earth comes between the Sun & Moon, the moon will glide into Earth’s shadow, gradually turning the white disk of light to orange or red, according to Phys.org

“That red light you see is sunlight that has skimmed and bent through Earth’s atmosphere and continued on through space to the moon,” notes Alan MacRobert of Sky and Telescope magazine. “In other words, it’s from all the sunrises and sunsets that ring the world at the moment.”

One take-away here has to do with the potential potency of this total lunar eclipse and the archetypal energies involved. Remember that eclipses can act like jump starts to a car, and jolt us into a new direction, way of thinking, or some kind of change, etc.

They can lead to sudden, unexpected events or revelations (especially this one on the Leo/Aquarius axis), that will likely manifest in the areas of your chart (houses) where the Sun & Moon fall at this time. Eclipses generally manifest between three weeks before and six months after, though they have been known to extend their effects for several years, depending…

Another message coming from this Leo Super Full Moon (closer to the Earth, remember?) may come in larger than life drama queen scenes, so be on the lookout now for displays of over the top emotion or histrionics. It’s like a “normal” full Moon on steroids, so this Super Moon’s closeness to Earth can make us even more “lunatic” (read: loo-nah-tic!) now, which is to say we may feel this energy more strongly than usual…

Since Full Moons are always about release, a simultaneous total lunar eclipse indicates endings as well. Eclipses run in what’s known as the Saros Cycles and have been traced back through the ages by many astrologers, among them Bernadette Brady.

Brady notes in “Predictive Astrology, The Eagle and the Lark,” that this particular Leo Full Moon total lunar eclipse (Saros Series 1 South) “is concerned with ideas and their enthusiastic expression,” and that “if this eclipse affects your chart, you will be flooded with ideas or options. There may seem to be an element of haste, but if you can go with new ideas, they will have positive outcomes.”

Hmm…sounds like in order to allow in such new ideas, we’ll probably have to release some older ones, eh? And that this may happen naturally. Be aware of where this eclipse is hitting your chart and you’ll be able to guesstimate into what area of life your new ideas will come…

Let There Be Light…

This Leo Full Moon is a lunar eclipse because the Aquarius Sun joins Venus, Hygeia, Juno, and the Aquarius South Node (past karma), while the Leo Moon aligns with Ceres & the Leo North Node in opposition.

As we feel the strong pull of Aquarian South Node energy to the past, we notice that only the Leo Moon & Ceres are aligned with the North Node, the direction of our future destiny. Let’s review how we might move forward consciously.

When the Leo Moon reflects back to the Aquarius Sun its own bright light, we’re reminded–while the Sun moves this month through this group-oriented, humanitarian, aha! moment sign–that the whole collective of humanity is comprised of separate individuals.

However mindful of this we remain, we also must recall that all full Moon energies require integration and balance to operate optimally.

What does this energetic integration look like?

First of all, what’s wounded you in terms of the Aquarian archetype either in early life or past life karma, particularly in the area of breaking away (or not!) from a group or tribe (i.e., family, religion, school, community, etc.) and their particular way of thinking. What’s got you clinging to an old way of dealing with issues around health and/or partnership?

You might have been ostracized (which could lead to self-ostracizing, aptly espoused by Groucho Marx’s famous quip: “I don’t wanna be a member of any group that’ll have me as a member!”) Perhaps you were ahead of your time and everyone around you thought you were crazy. Maybe you were, or you became crazy as a result, doubting your own intuitive or intellectual knowledge.

Or, alternatively, you stuck with the group (and its way of thinking) out of habit, or a sense of guilt or betrayal should you decide to leave, but you knew at some point that the group’s philosophy varied greatly from your own.

The results of sticking with that group or collective energy over time might have pushed you into a position of authority—one from which it became harder and harder to escape. So now you’re living a life that doesn’t include being true to yourself or your own individual beliefs, and which doesn’t leave you feeling truly happy or secure.

This Leo Full Moon lunar eclipse calls us all to think about why we align with those we do, whether they constitute a literal group or simply a particular philosophy or set of beliefs or rules–and whether this way of thinking benefits your freedom of self-expression, health, or one-on-one partnerships.

We’re drawn back now toward releasing old negative philosophical Aquarian collective ideas &/or trauma-related karma in order to move forward toward honoring our future solar creative individual selves…

I Glory In The Me Yet To Come

The Sun will shine, regardless. You get to decide how much you want your individual light to shine, and whether or not you need the group or collective to be able to do this.

We all walk that fine line between being accepted and being ourselves. Many of us—for whatever reason—feel we must hide our true inner selves for fear of being shamed, blamed, or otherwise deemed “different.”

The Leo Moon/Ceres/North Node call us to utilize what we’ve learned from any group or tribe to which we belong or previously belonged, and to bring it forward in our lives. Dwarf planet Ceres’ connotation is around sustenance, be it literal or metaphorical, so now is the time to figure out how to self-nurture by shining one’s own creative, solar light out into the world in order to fulfill one’s karmic destiny–without fear.

I’ve noted before that Jungian astrologer Liz Greene points out that the dilemma for those who carry Aquarian energy is about separating from the collective. Since we all have Uranus (Aquarius’s ruler) somewhere in our chart, the house or houses with this sign prominent represent areas where our ability to express our emotional and instinctive individual needs is being tested.

In The Art of Stealing Fire, Uranus in the Horoscope, Greene cautions against considering unconventionality equal to individuality. She writes: “…please try to rid yourselves of the association of Uranus with individuality,” because “unconventional does not mean individual…because the act of rebelling against something means that tone is in some way deeply bound up with, and subtly dominated by, the very things one is fighting. This is not an expression of individuality, because that comes from within, and is not dictated by attempting to be the opposite of something one perceives in the outer world.”

She adds: “One needs to be able to say, ‘hang on a minute. This is a wonderful and inspiring vision of the future, but does it apply to the world in which I am presently living? Is it viable in terms of my experience of life and human nature? Do I believe it with my heart and gut, as well as my head?…Can I contribute anything truly individual to making it work?’

“Without this kind of perspective, Uranus may wipe out individual values and individual authenticity, and what we have left is polemics. In its most negative form, these are the polemics of the terrorist, or the polemics of any mass movement which is aimed at destroying institutions or structures which are deemed in need of radical change.”

Green concludes, “if someone is trapped in such receptivity to the collective, without any individual sense of self to monitor, sift, and shape the revelation, he or she may lose touch with what is nourishing and creative on an inner level, and many important aspects of personal life may be unwittingly crushed.”

  Creating My Own Tomorrow

The Moon quincunxes Neptune at this Leo Full Moon lunar eclipse, which says we may be confused, easily deceived, or put our faith into something Quixotic; however, we may still continue to dream of what we can someday become…

It pays now to remember “from chaos comes clarity,” and that as long as we’re aware this is the dream stage and not the actuality, we should be fine. Quincunx is tantamount to an annoyance which, through its irritation, causes us to adjust something or other in our immediate environment.

So, when dealing with the more impersonal Aquarian energy prevalent right now, we can remind ourselves that through this Moon/Neptune quincunx we can adjust to any annoyances by allowing ourselves freedom of creative and emotional expression as at least a brief respite. This is preferable over putting too much faith in others and ending up deceived.

In addition, Mercury moves just after this Leo Full Moon from “work hard,” “keep the status quo,” and “don’t rock the boat” Capricorn energy into more objectively forward thinking, impartial, collective Aquarius energy, and we may have to put on our thinking caps to ascertain if what’s being said (or what we’re saying to others) is what we truly think or feel.

When I Become One With The Sun

The courage and strength to think and feel freely is the right and proper integration of the Aquarius and Leo energies prevalent now.

The message inherent in this Leo Full Moon lunar eclipse is that we must sustain ourselves by shining our true light up and outward and, in doing so follow our hearts regardless of the strong pull of the collective right now.

Though the Aquarian archetype often likes its external battles—think Prometheus and his defiance of Zeus when he stole fire to give to mankind–the battle now is within, not without.

It’s about finding that liminal space inside where you sing your own song, paint your own picture, dance your own dance, and generally simply follow your heart…

Why?

Because it’s your heart that knows whether it’s on the “right” road or not, even if it’s not the permanent road. And it’s your heart that cannot sacrifice its individual unique means of expression, or sublimate its feelings to any particular group or the collective as a whole, to be lost to anonymity forever…

Here’s a song that sprang to mind when writing this piece that I feel aptly describes the energy of this Leo Full Moon total lunar eclipse & its potential integrative energies…note how there’s an orchestra (group) AND soloists (individuals) ALL expressing themselves creatively! (Sorry the film’s a bit fuzzy in places, but I couldn’t find a clearer version…)

I Sing The Body Electric

From the movie “Fame”

“I sing the body electric
I celebrate the me yet to come
I toast to my own reunion
When I become one with the sun

And I’ll look back on Venus
I’ll look back on Mars
And I’ll burn with the fire of ten million stars
And in time, and in time we will all be stars

I sing the body electric
I glory in the glow of rebirth
Creating my own tomorrow
When I shall embody the earth

And I’ll serenade Venus
I’ll serenade Mars
And I’ll burn with the fire of ten million stars
And in time, and in time we will all be stars

We are the emperors now and we are the czars
And in time, and in time we will all be stars

I sing the body electric
I celebrate the me yet to come
I toast to my own reunion
When I become one with the sun

And I’ll look back on Venus
I’ll look back on Mars
And I’ll burn with the fire of ten million stars
And in time, and in time we will all be stars
And in time, and in time we will all be stars…”

Aries Full Moon October 16

Posted by Sheri Horn Hasan - November 13, 2016 - Astrology

Full Moons are times of release, and this Aries Full Moon is no exception. A Full Moon occurs when the faster moving Moon opposes the Sun in the sky by 180 degrees, and reflects back to the Sun its own light and its current sign’s polar opposite archetypal energy.

In short, Full Moons can help us become conscious, or to see, the hidden unconscious shadow side of the Sun’s more ego-oriented energy. Full Moons not only grant us this opportunity every month, but also remind us there is a full archetypal range of energies inherent in these polarities that we may express however we choose.

Likewise, all Full Moons highlight a pair of archetypal polar energies joined together through opposition, in order to give us the chance to release that which no longer serves our highest and best good.

Oppositions always represent relationship in astrology, and this theme is deepened on this Aries Full Moon because Libra is the archetypal sign of partnership, while Aries represents freedom of choice, the exercising of one’s personal will, and independence.

THE LIBRAN LABYRINTH

A metaphorical Libran labyrinth may present itself when we compromise too much for the sake of peace within partnership and/or remain paralyzed by indecision.

In turn, this may cause unhappiness in the long run—an inkling of which is glimpsed through the kind of passive/aggressive behavior where we smile through gritted teeth and answer questions by saying “No, I’m fine. Really, I’m FINE.”

This Libran tendency to avoid conflict at all costs, often coupled with an exasperating indecisiveness, can be only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the dilemma we may all experience right now vis-à-vis decision making…

We’re called by this Aries Full Moon to recognize that there’s another side to Libran energy which can, in turn, guide us out of any Libran labyrinths into which we may have wandered…

YOUR OWN PERSONAL TROJAN WAR

This Aries Full Moon conjoins with Uranus, the planet of unexpected change, and Eris, the dwarf planet named for the goddess of discord. Eris is the goddess who turns up uninvited at the banquet of the gods and disrupts the jovial gathering out of spite and jealousy for having been left off the guest list.

While Uranus energy is unpredictable and often shocking, Eris manifests as an energy that instigates. In Greek mythology, it’s Eris who tosses a golden apple down the banquet table marked “for the fairest of them all,” an action that ultimately provides the spark for the Trojan War.

As this potentially explosive pair meet up with the Aries Moon and oppose the peace loving Libra Sun, it’s hardly likely to produce an outcome—whatever that may be—that’s devoid of change of some kind.

The energy of Uranus is always about forcing us to break out of any complacent rut we may be in, and to shake ourselves loose of any ingrained patterns that have made us just a tad too secure, a.k.a., stuck

Combined with Eris, however, we have an energy that’s unlikely to be pleasant. So, since the Aries Full Moon highlights the themes of partnership vs. independence, the Uranus/Eris duo may well be trying to tell us it’s seriously time for something to change, and that this change may not at first be at all welcome.

The common assumption amongst psychological astrologers is that change comes when life has become too stagnant. Uranus—often likened to the Greek figure Prometheus, known as the “great awakener”—exists to remind us that the only constant is change and that to remain the same always is to defy universal energetic law.

PRO CHOICE

In combination with this Aries Full Moon energy, we find transiting Mars moving to meet up in the sky with Pluto, while Mercury squares them both. Like Uranus/Eris next to the Aries Moon and opposite the Libra Sun, a Mars/Pluto combo can be quite explosive.

Tensions are bound to exist between ourselves and others that may result in harsh words or a kind of obsessive intransigence in terms of our thoughts and ideas.

Since Full Moons provide the opportunity for release, this one may shock us into discovering how our own ideology may mirror back to us through the opposite opinions of others who smash us in the face (metaphorically) with an opposite but just as ideological way of thinking.

Uranus/Eris opposite the Sun can manifest outside ourselves through the actions of others in sudden unpredictable events. In the end, this amounts to nothing more than projected unconscious inner energy.

When the soul is crying out for change, but the conscious ego is unaware of the soul’s true desires and attempts to cling to the status quo, change will nonetheless ultimately come.

What we often don’t recognize is that our need for change originates internally and subconsciously but that we project this need out to others who actually take the actions that cause the desired change.

Operating on an unconscious level the Mercury square to Mars/Pluto may well create further resistance to the kind of change our soul truly desires. Our conscious ego—which likes to deal only with that which it can see, hear, feel, and touch–may seek to protect our psyches at all costs from such an unwanted intrusion by the subconscious…

And the greater our suppression of our soul’s need for change, the more shocking the change will be…

MY SIGN IS NO!

The combination of all of these energies at this Aries Full Moon may result in our having to take independent action of some kind, and that action is likely to manifest through voicing our own opinions and/or making clear our individuality, on some level at least.

In other words, sometimes one simply has to take a stand.

When you boil it all down, the classic Libra indecisiveness stems from fear. Fear that by making a decision we will have made the wrong choice. Fear that we aren’t whole and always need a “better half” to complete us–whether that other half be comprised of a significant other, family member, child, friend, colleague, boss, etc.

As the Libra Sun’s light is cast in stark relief upon this Aries Full Moon, it reminds us all that taking independent action doesn’t have to come at the cost of losing the love or support of others.

Rather, it implies that–by exercising our independence—we become free…

A LITTLE BIT OF POLITICS

This energy is nowhere more apparent than the dilemma many Americans face in the upcoming November 8 U.S. presidential election.

Astrologers are all over the internet with their predictions. I am not going to predict how the race will end, I’m only going to point out how this Aries Full Moon is throwing yet another high speed curve ball at us.

We are called to remember: “As above, so below, as within, so without, as the universe, so the soul.” Events on the world stage are reflections of the collective unconscious. You can’t have a collective unconscious without having individual psyches involved.

This is an argument for every vote counts and everyone can make a difference.

Though there may be many who disagree with me–and I respect everyone’s right to agree to disagree peacefully and without vitriol–I also believe with all my heart that this Aries Full Moon is sending us all a message which revolves around not clinging to “don’t make waves” energy that often becomes the embodiment of the Libra archetype.

High side Libra energy actually illustrates for us the true meaning of discourse and debate, an art sadly lost amongst our current day politicians and many members of the media and which respects the right of ALL of us to both speak and choose freely.

This Aries Full Moon says: “don’t forget to take the action of weighing your choices side by side, in a pro and con objective way, regardless of any potential shocks or conspiracy theories, and devoid of fear.

It reminds us, too, that we all have the right to hold fast to our intention to move forward independently toward peace, harmony, and love for all of our brothers and sisters regardless of color, religion, race, gender, etc.

Namaste…

Here’s a little reminder from Meghan Trainor’s song/video No! that it’s ok to do your own thing without always being in partnership…

Uranus Stations Retrograde July 29

Posted by Sheri Horn Hasan - August 3, 2016 - Astrology

The first thing you learn about the planet Uranus if you’re studying astrology is that it represents sudden, unpredictable, unplanned, and/or unexpected energy. The joke is that if you can predict it, it won’t happen—because with Uranus one should always expect the unexpected.

Some liken Uranian energy to the tarot card The Tower because it represents a similar sudden unexpected turn of events–past or future–depending on your reading.

In psychological astrology, Uranus is the planet that represents each individual’s journey toward individuation in this lifetime.

According to Merriam Webster Dictionary, “individuate” means: a) to give individuality to; and b) to form a distinct entity; while “individuation” translates as “the process by which individuals in society become differentiated from one another.”

Jungian analyst and astrologer Liz Greene notes that the archetypal energy of the mythological god Uranus represents an individual’s quest to break away from the group. Greene points out that is can be particularly difficult to do, because one must express one’s own unique nature apart from the group–apart from the sheeple–in order to become successfully individuated.

Something Unpredictable But In The End Is Right

Why then does Uranian (and by extension Aquarius, the sign ruled by Uranus in modern astrology) energy translate into unpredictable events and sudden happenings in our lives?

The answer to that question lies in every individual’s quest to stand apart from the group, or to individuate, which may prove more problematic for some than for others.

Safety in numbers is an old, but verifiable, adage which translates into: it’s easier to go along to get along than to fight for your own individual viewpoint—especially when that viewpoint might make you a pariah.

When we resist the call to change, to be more of who we are rather than less, to stand up for our individual rights against the group or within relationship, we are asking to remain always the same.

“The transits of Uranus are not malefic in the traditional sense, except to the extent that you are unwilling to accept newness and change in your life,” writes Rob Hand in his book “Planets in Transit.”

“Uranus challenges the rigid structures in life that most people work so hard to build,” Hand adds. “Many people value regularity and predictability to much that they will even sacrifice personal happiness to get it.”

Psychological astrologer Richard Idemon points out in his book “The Magic Thread” that the universe does not like stagnation caused by lack of willingness to change. Such stasis is antithetical to the law of energy, according to Idemon, which is that change is the only constant.

The Universe Is Benign

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: When planets in the heavens impact our own individual natal horoscopes (or charts), they do so for one purpose: to help us increase our capability to become ever more conscious.

Why?

Because it’s through such growth in consciousness that we mortals become better able to understand ourselves, the world around us, and to share our individual gifts with the world. After all, if life is about happiness (and I believe that to be true), then–astrologically speaking–it is the universal movement of the planets in the heavens that provide us our individual roadmaps toward that goal.

If we have been conditioned to believe that happiness is defined by money, social status, specific relationships, particular jobs, schools, or neighborhoods, Uranus is the planet that come along as says “f@#k that, THIS is what will make you truly happy!”

However, often we are resistant to the notion that our ultimate path might run this way and not that, often because our egos have been formed based on what we’ve been told, taught, or (in some cases) forced to believe.

“But this kind of rigidity is ultimately destructive to life in its highest sense,” says Hand. “Life is or should be a constant ongoing confrontation between yourself and the world, with an energy that keeps everything fresh and lively.”

The degree of difficulty any individual has in reconciling rigid egoistic beliefs or goals with that which will bring them true happiness, is the degree to which they may be zapped by sudden unexpected change…

When Uranus Stations Retrograde

When Uranus moves in direct motion in the sky, we all work on becoming true to ourselves…as Polonius says in Shakespeare’s play Hamlet:

“This above all: to thine own self be true,
And it must follow, as the night the day,
Thou canst not then be false to any man.”

What can become problematic, however—in addition to one’s resistance to change–is the desire for perfection, as Uranus also archetypally represents an idealized picture of perfection.

Such ideals, however, run the very high risk of becoming marred when the attempt is made to bring them down to earth into the hard cold light of day in order to become manifest. It seems the vision never fits exactly the visual or imagined view of either an individual or a group because something always seems to be lost in the translation.

When Uranus transits a particular house or sensitive point in your chart, it “…makes us conscious of imperfection,” according to Erin Sullivan in her book “Retrograde Planets.”

“Uranus threatens ego containment because one must explore unknown territory and potential within oneself at the risk of failure,” Sullivan notes. “It is particularly important, therefore, to use the retrograde phase of Uranus’ transit to test what has lasting value and what is merely potential with no containment.”

Such a confrontation between the self and the world is normally avoided by most of us, because we are acutely aware that it’s better to “survive half dead” than to lose, says Hand. “But those are not the only alternatives; it is only fear that makes it seem that way.”

Here’s the song “Good Riddance” by Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong. Born with a natal Uranus retrograde, Armstrong reminds us that–like a Uranus transit’s retrograde period–we may encounter something unpredictable that is–in the end–just right…

Sagittarius Full Moon May 21

Posted by Sheri Horn Hasan - May 22, 2016 - Astrology

The Sun entered Gemini on May 20, and no sooner is he dipping his toe into the sign of the twins, then BAM! along comes a Sagittarius Full Moon opposition!

To make matters even more exciting (and some might say worse), the Sagittarius Moon will join up with Mars (currently retrograde) and oppose the newly Geminian Sun.

Ok, so what does that mean?

Bear with me here, gentle reader, as I attempt to sum it all up in a way that makes sense to you all.

Gemini Sun & The Small Picture

I remember one of my first astrology teachers referring to those who carry a lot of Gemini energy as “dot collectors.”
This was so, she explained, because the Gemini archetype is associated with collecting and passing information. Those who carry Gemini energy in their soul’s energetic makeup are generally curious, inquisitive, loquacious, and often entertaining communicators.

Because they’re capable of collecting so much information and passing it on to others, they can be great writers, lecturers, teachers, broadcasters, entertainers, etc.–not to mention a fun addition to your next cocktail party!

What they may lack, however, is the capability to put all these puzzle pieces together into a whole picture.

Anyone who’s ever gone to a movie on the recommendation of a friend and hated it, only to find out later that the friend simply took a recommendation from the friend of a friend of a friend—or better yet, the guy on the grocery line—knows what I’m talking about!

Anyone reading this familiar with the childhood game of “telephone,” where you whisper a phrase into the ear of a child, who whispers it to the next child, and so on? Well, at the end of the line the final child almost always gives voice to a phrase vastly different from the original one!

With Gemini energy around, there is room for much information but also potential for little connection to a whole. Or, put another way, simply because there’s a lot of information rolling around, the certainty that we may draw an accurate conclusion from that information ain’t necessarily so…

Sagittarius Full Moon & The Big Picture

Lest you begin to think I’m focusing only on the downside of Gemini energy, let me stop you right there! The Gemini capability to gather up the bits and pieces in and of our lives is important!

This aligns with our capability and to figure out how to fit these pieces into a broader spectrum–one that carries greater meaning–in alignment with its polar opposite, Sagittarius energy.

As the Sagittarius Moon waxes full at 1 degree 13 minutes of the sign of higher consciousness, we are called to look at how all those bits and pieces of our lives translate into a bigger picture theme.

The opportunity arises with this Sagittarius Full Moon to do some deep thinking about your overall themes and the purpose of your life.

As a writing coach and editor, often I find that writers gotta write, but that they can be totally out of touch with the bigger, broader themes of their work. Often this surprises me, but it’s so common that I don’t let that get in the way of an individual’s need for creative expression, whatever the medium!

Now is an opportunity for us all to dig deeply into the what’s and the why’s of doing what we do! What’s it all about, Alfie? Is there a rhyme or reason to our being, or is all of life random bits and pieces, flotsam and jetsam as they say, with no real inter-connectedness?

And if you’re a writer/author, creative, and/or intuitive, now is the time to hone in on not exactly what it is that you want to express, but rather what—when you put it all together—the form of your expression means!

Sadge Moon Conjunct Mars Opposite Gemini Sun

Much is being made of this lunation, for as the Sagittarius Moon conjoins with retrograde Mars, and they both oppose a Sun newly in Gemini, the energy is ripe for irritability, arguments, and the like.

The degree of this lunation, however, represents Mars opposition to the Sun as part of its every two-year, two-month retrograde cycle. Erin Sullivan, author of “Retrograde Planets,” regards this particular stage of the Mars retrograde cycle as one which brings out into the light unconscious energy.

“Wherever Mars is transiting retrograde we are contacting deep seated and often disguised forms of rage, passion, heat, energy, raw libido, and ambition,” writes Sullivan. “We might not be consciously aware of what is stirring deep within the psyche, but feelings moods, events, and circumstances around the time of transiting Sun-Mars opposition identify a specific area which needs to come to conscious awareness.

“Psychologically, it is necessary to expel the festering energy in order to become a more productive person,” Sullivan adds.

Full Moons always represent a time of release. If this lunation occurs on or close to any planets or other sensitive points in your chart you will doubtless feel it and see it with more immediate intensity than others.

The “drama” of any event now will occur in the houses in which the Sagittarius Full Moon falls. Watch for events of a martial nature out in the world as well…

So, what in your life needs to be brought out into the light of consciousness? What irksome issues have you swept under the rug for the sake of peace, or because you’ve felt too impotent to fight them successfully or unable to rise to the occasion for some other reason?

What may seem on the surface to be a random argument, irritability, or outright conflagration is actually the external representation of how your puzzle pieces fit together to form a bigger whole as you continue to figure out what’s actually worth fighting for…

So batten down the hatches, but prepare to learn how something you may deem trivial or superficial factors ultimately into the bigger picture of you life and its overall purpose.

It’s time to wake up, and the Sagittarius archer is pointing his arrow directly at you! How you perceive that action—whether you choose to run and hide, face the music, own up, spit it out, or just generally REACT in a way that serves your higher purpose—only you can determine in the end…

Through it all, however, try to remember there’s ALWAYS a bigger picture!

Stay tuned for Part 2 and tomorrow’s shift in motion from retrograde to direct of Mercury in Taurus and how that fits into this Sagittarius Full Moon energy as well!

Namaste…

Aries New Moon: The Instinct For Survival

Another New Moon is upon us and it’s a biggie! This Aries New Moon is not only about new beginnings—which you should see the culmination of in about six months—but about the will to survive as well…

The Aries archetype is all about survival in the sense that one has to fight one’s way out his or her mother’s womb in order to be born. if you really think about it, the tremendous amount of energy it takes to burst forth out of the peaceful uroboric waters of the womb into the birth canal and out of your mother’s body, you’ll begin to get what I mean!

But what is it that tells us it’s the right time to go from our blissfully unaware state of pre-birth and propel ourselves out in the cold harshly lit outside world—a world in which, as humans, we are unable to fend for ourselves without our mother’s care?

   Simple: It’s INSTINCT!

So Aries energy, particularly prevalent in the universe at this Aries New Moon—and in your life, depending on into what house of your natal chart it falls—is about proactive energy and about having the energy and will not only to survive but to thrive…

Pluto & Uranus: Still Doing Their Square Dance

New Moons are always times to set your intentions for the month. In this case, you may set them for the next six months in order to really be able to continue on your path, regardless of any bombardment of universal energies you may experience personally between now and then.

Because this Aries New Moon meets up with Uranus in Aries and squares Pluto in Capricorn, it’s likely effects will factor into how you’re handling the Pluto/Uranus energies that have dominated the heavens (and thus our lives here on Earth) since at least 2012…

This square’s energies are prevalent everywhere you look: from the Arab Spring uprising in the Middle East to Ferguson, Missouri (and the Black Lives Matter movement), from the Syrian refugee crisis to the breakdown in infrastructure worldwide (but particularly here in the U.S.), and more…

These are the forces of revolution vs. the status quo, anti-change, clinging to a “business as usual” mentality, at all costs.

So how to navigate such energies?

If you’ve been hit personally by the energies of the Pluto/Uranus square (meaning they’ve touched sensitive planetary or natal chart points as part of your energetic makeup) you probably know it by now…

Such energies may have included, but are not limited to: loss (or gain) of a job, money, and/or relationship (including loss through death.) Loss is usually about the need for transformation.

And when sudden events derail or propel us, often they are the result of our need for change that’s risen to such a point that a crisis occurs in order for the universe to get us in touch with our soul’s true desire for change.

When death (either literal or figurative in the form of endings) occurs in one’s life, this external manifestation reflects changes occurring in our own internal energies. Resistance to such changes usually makes it tougher to adjust and may simply delay the inevitable…

Changes—be they deemed negative or positive in our lives initially–are always about moving our soul forward for the purpose of living our lives to their highest potential in this lifetime.

So What Are Your Intentions?

If they’re about something new—bravo! Plant that seed and go for it! If they’re connected to an ongoing or already established project or work, then keep on keepin’ on–especially if you’ve already had a modicum of success and are attempting to build on that.

The important thing to know is that not only is this Aries New Moon conjoining Uranus in Aries and squaring Pluto in Capricorn, but it’s trining Saturn as well. A trine is what we astrologers call an “easy” aspect.

Saturn is the planet of hard work. Saturn helps us move slowly and cautiously, and think accurately with an eye toward manifestation. This trine is likely to make it easier for us to do some of the necessary work without experiencing undue hardship. Think of Saturn like a mentor, a teacher, or a guide, who says to you: “you can do it—slow and steady wins the race.”

However, with Saturn, there’s no free lunch. Under Saturn’s tutelage, you can’t have dessert until you eat your meat (as Pink Floyd liked to say), and you can’t go out to play until you eat your dinner…Saturn can help ground the planting of this new seed…

…even if it’s amidst any turmoil in your life connected to transformation or sudden unexpected change–and the resistance you may feel to such transformation or change.

But if you succumb to the fiery, impatient, impetuousness of this Aries New Moon energy—especially in its conjunction with the “leap before you look” rebelliousness of Uranus in Aries, you may find the foundation upon which you’ve attempted to set your intentions is less than firm.

Far better to allow yourself to believe in any aha! or eureka! moments this Aries New Moon energy brings to you now based on the Sun & Moon’s alignment with Uranus, but to proceed slowly.

Saturn is retrograde until August 13, making this an excellent time for you to be inspired, but remember to move cautiously enough to ensure you’ll ultimately be able to manifest any intentions set now.

When Saturn guides us in this fashion, who are we to ignore him or dispute his wise advice? And this advice shows up in our lives in the events and relationships around us. So if a project gets, waylaid, cut, postponed, or otherwise stuck in the mud, do not despair.

Likewise, if a job or relationship appears to falter or end, it means that it is no longer instrumental to your future growth. This departure will more than likely open up the necessary space for something new–something better!–to come into your life…

Acceptance of Ch-Ch-Ch-Changes: Always Up To You!

The Aries New Moon is a time to dig deeply into the earth (metaphoricallyspeaking) and plant a seed that you know, with the proper tender loving care, will take root. You want it to grow into a sturdy plant that matches your expectation.

So much of astrology is based on cycles. The New Moon and Full Moon cycles occur approximately every 14 days, so the universe provides us with the opportunity to set new intentions, or to reaffirm or reset older intentions, every lunar cycle of 29.5 days.

It’s not now or never, and it never will be, in terms of how the universe guides us toward our best and highest interest in this lifetime should we choose to become aware that our lives are always a matter of our choices.

When we choose to embrace that choice is our right as part of our human, incarnated experience, we leave behind the blame game, the he said/she said, the “but you told me to do it that way ergo I’m not responsible for the outcome.”       Likewise, any tendencies to play the martyr and try to save everyone–which may or may not, in the end, be in your best interest–can fall by the wayside.

Embracing the kind of change inherent in this Aries New Moon energy includes having the courage to follow your instinct. Making a choice, even if it’s an instinctual one, can propel us out into the world and allow us to leave behind the security of the womb so that we may LIVE.

(And here is where this New Moon’s trine to Saturn has your back, assuring you it won’t be as hard as you might think.)

Once planted, the seed must be nurtured, and the intentions affirmed on an ongoing basis—utilizing the clarity of that trine to Saturn. This enables us to make any necessary changes, or to halt or amend, in the near term what you may be attempting to do in order to have a better, more prosperous and meaningful outcome in the long term.

 More Retrogrades in April…

During these next few months–since Saturn’s station retrograde on March 25–we’ll be seeing and feeling more planetary retrogrades. On April 17 Mars begins his long retrograde period, while Saturn continues his retrograde motion untilAugust 13.

Pluto stations retrograde on April 18 until September 26, and in the shorter term, Mercury retrogrades in the sign of Taurus on April 28. Neptune and Chiron will both station retrograde in July.

Typical retrograde energy/behavior looks like this: time to review, re-analyze, rethink, re-plan, re-strategize, revisit (or just about any word you can put “re” in front of that you can think of, lol and that pertains to your specific situation.)

Get used to it, as we’ll experience a lot of it! However, during this period if your hopes, dreams, and wishes appear to be stagnating or moving in the wrong direction, hang tight…

When these planets begin to move direct, one by one, as well as at six months form this Aries New Moon, you’ll begin to feel yourself once again on terra firma, or solid ground.

So go forth and prosper, I say…don’t mistake all of this retrograde energy for true stagnation. Instead, utilize the energy of this Aries New Moon, especially the 48-hour period between now and 7:24 a.m. ET on April 9, to make a list of your intentions.

Then meditate on them, pray if you are so inclined, and get out the shovel and spade and plant that metaphorical seed.

When the Sun moves into Taurus on April 19, he may well help gestate that seed with tender loving care. And six months from now you may be singing a different tune–one that bursts forth from inside instinctually!

Life is a continuum, and so it goes…

Another little blast from the past that seemed fitting for this Aries New Moon (complete with retro roller disco dancing!)

“At first I was afraid, I was petrified
Kept thinking I could never live
Without you by my side…

 Watch I WILL SURVIVE Here!

Gloria Gaynor, I Will Survive

…Did you think I’d crumble
Did you think I’d lay down and die?
Oh no, not I
I will survive
As long as I know how to love
I know I’ll stay alive
I’ve got all my life to live
I’ve got all my love to give
And I’ll survive
I will survive…

Mars Enters Scorpio January 3

Posted by Sheri Horn Hasan - January 3, 2016 - Astrology

When Mars enters Scorpio it’s a wham bam, thank you ma’am, full speed ahead kind of energy! If you’re not careful, you might not know what hit you…

Listen Up & Look Out!

When the planet of personal will—Mars=I AM—transits through the sign of transformation at all costs, death & rebirth, change or be changed—we’ve got quite a potentially combustible combination.

Don’t forget that in traditional astrology—way before the planet Pluto was discovered in 1930—Mars ruled Scorpio. Hence, to say this is very strong energy would be an understatement…

The purpose of Mars in our charts is to aid and abet the Sun in achieving its highest potential in this lifetime. In the sign of Scorpio, Mars calls us to look at where we’ve become disempowered in ways that do not allow us to move or express ourselves freely.

No Pain, No Gain

No pain, no gain, is a Mars in Scorpio kind of attitude.

There is a huge amount of power behind the nuclear nature of the planet of the warrior, athlete, & hero when it transits through the sign ruled by the god of the underworld and all things intense, hidden, taboo, and unconscious.

The motivation to dig deeply into your subconscious to identify patterns that cause you to act or move in certain ways throughout life—patterns that you might not want to repeat going forward!–is at hand.

When Mars enters Scorpio, an important question arises: How much of an opportunity is this for you to leave behind the victim and/or perpetrator mentality and transform it into energy that defends and protects those who are weaker and less able to protect and defend themselves?

While there’s a call to transform ourselves in areas where we previously felt unable to speak, move, act, or think freely, Mars in Scorpio’s full speed ahead, pedal to the metal, it’s too late to turn back now, forward thrust energy provides us with the momentum necessary push through to gain the kind of personal transformation desired.

In short, there’s ample wind behind our sails to accomplish our aims…

So Mars in Scorpio can be quite an exciting time if one chooses to think of it this way…

Now—until March 5 (and when Mars retrogrades back into Scorpio on May 28 & stays there until August 3)—you’ll doubtless be presented with opportunities to identify, unearth, & excavate these unconscious patterns. Only then may you bring them forward into the light so you can examine them, keep what you want, ditch the rest, and forge a new path going forward!

 Sex & Money

Negative manifestations of this transit can be intense sexual attraction (including to the point of obsession), uber-impatience & irritability, and manipulation, particularly in the sexual and financial realms.

Lower end Mars in Scorpio energies include: gratuitous sex with no emotional involvement; coveting another’s wife/girlfriend, boyfriend/husband, money/possessions, etc.–i.e., jealous, jealousy, jealousy…

Not the way to go or in your soul’s best interest as you attempt to move forward into greater consciousness!

So watch your heart and your wallet (or as my Capricorn mother used to say, your “pocketbook”), lest you mistake lust for love or money for happiness…

Remember, too, whatever is visited now in terms of these energies may be re-visited when Mars retrogrades back in Scorpio next spring & summer.

No need to resist the motivation to go deep about just about anything, but specifically about the inner workings of your own psyche, so that you may bring to light any hidden desires, jealousies, and/or passions.

Think of Mars’ time in Scorpio like that of a giant bulldozer, or earth digger, plunging deep into the ground to bring into the light the rubble that, when sifted through, will reveal the precious bits of metal hidden in the earth…

Move Mountains, Work A Miracle

Scorpio energy also has a lot to do with loyalty because Scorpio is a fixed sign that allows us to forge the iron bonds of trust with another human being.

This kind of trust is not lightly broken and is one of the reasons why revenge is a dish best served cold according to Mars in Scorpio when the Mars person has been betrayed or otherwise hoodwinked by another.

“I can move mountains
I can work a miracle, work a miracle
Keep you like an oath
May nothing but death do us part…”
Fall Out Boy

When Mars enters Scorpio, the choice is yours: You can set off the nuclear bomb and destroy the mountain or you can put your shoulder into it, work that miracle, and MOVE the mountain…

Namaste…

FULL MOON IN LEO!

Ready To Strut Your Stuff?

Leo Full Moon Crop

This Full Moon in the sky is an opposition between the Moon in Leo’s emotional desire to be noticed, praised & adored–simply for being who you are–and the Aquarian Sun’s desire to maintain independence but at the same time be part of a greater group, i.e., wo/mankind.

Integrating these two energies is what’s called for today and during the next two weeks until the New Moon occurs in Aquarius–again!–on February 18.

The Moon represents your inner child. The archetype of Leo is about performing, and about pleasing others through that performance.

Leo energy likes to be stroked and told how proud you are of her!

This Full Moon in Leo asks that you recognize your own special unique connection to the divine, and figure out how to best channel this connection into something energetic that benefits wo/mankind as a whole.

The Sun in Aquarius is about coexisting as part of the group but being able to do your own thing at the same time.

How does one fulfill one’s inner child’s desire to play, create, and be authentic, yet help her fellow wo/man at the same time?

Such is the conundrum of this Full Moon!

Now is the time–while Mercury is still retrograde in Aquarius until February 11–to be re-thinking, revising, rewriting, re-editing, re-examining, repairing, re-working, rearranging, restructuring all of your creative ideas!

The Mercury retrograde period is about relationships–how can you be your authentic self and still shine? THAT’S what you’re working on internally right now…so polish that performance–your grand opening awaits you!

MERCURY RETROGRADE TODAY THROUGH FEB. 11TH!

Posted by Sheri Horn Hasan - January 22, 2015 - Astrology

Mercury Retro 1-21-15Ok, so last night I spent TWO hours in traffic for a trip that should have taken half that time!

Rather than find myself victim of road rage, I realized it was “Mercury Retro Eve,” since Mercury was due to station retrograde at 10:54 a.m. eastern time today, January 21, and it was already appearing to slow its planetary motion.

Mercury, the planet ruling your intellect, communication, business/commerce, siblings, etc., stays in the air sign of Aquarius until March 12–and air signs are concerned with relationship.

So while Mercury is retrograde in Aquarius until February 11, the planet of communication calls us to re-examine our relationships.

“The unexamined life is not worth living.” ~ Socrates

“By paying close attention to how one creates and develops associations with people, one finds a deeper awareness of the importance of relating,” writes Erin Sullivan in “Retrograding Planets, Traversing The Inner Landscape.”

A large part of Mercury’s function during its retrograde cycles (which happen three to four times annually for 21 days each) is to bring up from the subconscious information learned consciously, and to incorporate this information into the conscious mind as wisdom.

How cool is that?

During the period from now until February 11, even though our communications may be, er, shall we say, a little off, resulting in issues such as missed appointments, broken promises, lost documents, unreliable equipment (particularly those used for the purpose of communication such as computers, cell phones, iPads, etc.), these incidents provide us with several opportunities.

For example, we can dig deeper to find better ways to manage our time, concentrate on communicating more clearly, and better assess our priorities and productivity.

Combined with the Sun’s energy in Aquarius until February 18, and Mercury’s stay in the same sign until March 12–we are given the opportunity from now until February 11 to plant the seed of creative brilliance, and to concentrate on re-thinking, re-vising, re-writing, re-adjusting, etc., our message for greater clarity.

And in the process–who knows?–you just might discover and put into place some new long-range goals that, when they manifest, will set you apart from the herd based on your own, individual, creative stamp!

IT’S THE STAR OF BETHLEHEM!

Posted by Sheri Horn Hasan - December 25, 2014 - Astrology

Star of Bethlehem Resized   No, it’s a planet! No, it’s two planets conjoined!       Legend (and the New Testament of the Christian religion) has it that the Magi, or 3 wise men, were led to the manger of the newborn baby, Jesus Christ, immediately following his birth in the town of Bethlehem.
Today various different astronomical, astrological, and religious interpretations exist about the exact nature of this heavenly light and the “facts” describing exactly when the Magi came upon the Christ infant/child.

Many believe the Star of Bethlehem to be a conjunction of the planets Jupiter and Saturn in the sign of Pisces, an event that occurred thrice in 7 B.C.
Jupiter was (and still is) associated with royalty, while Saturn was associated with the protection of the Jews. Pisces was then ruled by the planet Jupiter (prior to the discovery of the planet Neptune in 1846) and represents spirituality, among other things.
It’s widely believed that the sighting of this planetary pair in Pisces and the naming of Christ as the Messiah kicked off an era of Christianity that’s lasted in many parts of the globe for 2,000+ years.
While some of the traditions associated with the Christmas holiday are clearly incorporated from pagan times, many nevertheless are now are part of indoctrinated religious rites of passage.
Today, many the world over celebrate the holiday Christmas which commemorates the birth of their lord Jesus Christ.
To those who celebrate, I offer this beautiful song and video (a new version of an old song), which I came across earlier today, and which seems terrifically appropriate for the spirit of the day.

(Forgive the commercial–it’s short and worth the wait…)

Blessings to all beings today and every day; may all beings be safe; may all being be happy! Amen & Merry Christmas!
