What Kind Of Love Have You Got NOW?
When Venus visits Virgo for the second time in less than three months of her last foray into the archetypal sign of work, health, and service (July 18-31), the goddess of beauty, love, and all that we value, gets fussy…
This is terrific if it leads to cleaning up our act–for real!–but not so cool if we’re all about criticism and self-denial…
Since Venus’s retrograde through the sign of creativity, romance, and children (a.k.a. Leo!) from July 31 til August 27, we’ve been called to value our creations, be they actual offspring created in our likeness, or other energetically artistic endeavors…
Venus now re-enters Virgo on October 8 and brings us into the land of discernment for a month until November 8.
The Darker Side of Venus In Virgo
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: the less positive manifestation of Virgo energy (and those who carry it prominently in their energetic makeup know this well!) is the desire to be PERFECT.
If you beat yourself up–either consciously or through unconscious self-sabotaging tactics–then you know what I’m tawkin’ about, as they say where I come from…
Could be about keeping your immediate environment neat, clean, & tidy…might be your personal hygiene that’s never in question…you could even go so far as becoming obsessive/compulsive in your everyday behavior–especially when stressed…
…or it might simply manifest as your desire to helpfully criticize for a higher purpose, i.e., that of making the world accountable in a more orderly, understandable, & predictable way…
WTF? Who’s perfect? YOU?
Here’s a piece of tough love for ya: Definitely not!
Does that make a damn bit of difference in this world?
Because when perfection is our goal we seek to control the environment in which we live. And when we do that, we are too heavily invested in playing the role of dictator.
Uh oh…could it be? Is it possible? Is the Virgoan defense against victimization–instead of simple order–control?
This is one answer, yes…and it may be the correct answer, depending on the circumstances.
However, when one has experienced a great deal of chaos or trauma in one’s early life, one may seek to protect oneself by developing the tendency to, shall we say, head off a crisis (a.k.a., confusion) through excessive control.
In this sense, control becomes a defense mechanism against the unknown, the erratic, the terrifyingly dangerous energies that might strike at and destroy one’s sense of stability at any given moment.
But what happens when Virgo energy takes over and begins to try to control the world?
Venus seeks out what she values according to the astrological sign through which she transits. In Virgo this is order, precision, accuracy, detail, and discernment.
When her pendulum swings too far in one direction, however, Venus may end up like Captain Queeg in “The Caine Mutiny,” detailing with neurotic proficiency a list of everyone else’s “wrongs.”
“Your best, Mr. Keith, is only a maximum of inefficiency.” ~ Captain Queeg, The Caine Mutiny
Is It Time To Stop Beating Yourself Up?
What if it’s not a job well done? What if you didn’t get it entirely right? So you fail now and then?
Think about it: Where would you be if you hadn’t even tried?
Chances are in the same place you were before you started!
Don’t let Venus in Virgo push you into a corner filled with self-doubt; one in which you cannot see beyond the foreground–where you cannot see the forest from the trees, as they say…
We will always need to be mindful of details in order to carry out a plan successfully. But do we really need to criticize everything we do, say, write, paint, sing, play, dance, film, photograph, etc., etc., etc?
Or can we relax enough to understand that practice can make as close to perfect as possible, but that perfection is not the REAL goal.
The real goal is to accomplish what you desire for the sake of moving forward in life. And, on the road to accomplishment, there’s often a lot to learn.
We learn from our mistakes, from being imperfect and taking imperfect action. We move forward by taking a step back and regaining our balance, recalculating our options, rethinking our moves…
Then when we move forward again we do so with an even greater chance of success!
Otherwise, we can stay mired in the details, stuck in impossible perfectionist goals, and stagnate in our own personal hell of self-criticism.
Control Freak Or Victim?
And what if this is not you? What if you’d rather play the victim side of the equation?
Most likely this will become apparent while Venus travels through Virgo, as Virgo’s shadow side may appear in the form of taking the easier way out: that of playing the victim…
“Victim of love, I see your broken heart
You got your stories to tell
Victim of love, it’s such an easy plot,
And you know how to play it so well…”
(“Victim Of Love” The Eagles)
One thing’s for sure…while Venus is in Virgo it’ll be easier to think about the details, so why not give some thought to whether or not these archetypal energies pertain to you?
Once aware, you can discern where you fall in Venus in Virgo’s archetypal range of energies and decide whether or not you are truly happy there…
